Social Events

Ice Skating Social

February 24, 2024

Toward the end of winter, OMEGA led a trip to the Riverside Skating Center in Wabash Landing.  We enjoyed hanging out and doing a traditional winter activity together!

Prospective Student Panel and Bowling

February 22, 2024

Each spring, the Mechanical Engineering department organizes a student panel and bowling social to welcome prospective graduate students and help them decide whether Purdue is the right fit for them.  OMEGA members annually sit on the panel to share their experience and answer questions, and then enjoy an evening of bowling with the prospective students!

Prophetstown State Park "Trek and Treat"

October 21, 2023

Shortly before Halloween, OMEGA students enjoyed an afternoon of beautiful fall weather at Prophetstown State Park.  The event began with lawn games and free Panera, followed by a 5-mile hike through the field and woods.  This was a great chance to get off-campus, visit a nearby state park, and enjoy a break together!

Fall 2023 Welcome and Scavenger Hunt

August 25, 2023

To kick off the year and help new students get acclimated to campus, OMEGA organized a scavenger hunt -- a two-hour competition to find and snap a selfie with your team at various locations around campus.  The event ended with a social in Engineering Mall and prizes for the winning teams!

Summer Cookout

July 17, 2023

Sponsored by the ME department, OMEGA planned and prepared a summer cookout in July 2023.  With free burgers, hot dogs, and other snacks cooked in Engineering Mall, this event was meant to bring together current ME grad students to socialize and enjoy a break together over the summer.

Canoe Trip

June 3, 2023

In collaboration with the Purdue Graduate Student Government (PGSG), Herrick Student Resource Committee (HSRC), and Zucrow Student Association (ZSA), OMEGA hosted an off-campus trip to go canoeing at Turkey Run State Park, with over 50 students attending.  This trip provided an opportunity to get off campus, hang out with graduate students in other disciplines, and explore a new area!

Bowling at PMU Rack and Roll

May 5, 2023

To wrap up Finals Week, OMEGA organized Friday evening bowling at the Rack and Roll bowling alley in the Purdue Memorial Union (PMU).  Over 20 students attended to de-stress and enjoy an evening of bowling!

Chicago Trip

December 17, 2022

OMEGA activities extend beyond Purdue's campus!  Following the Fall 2022 semester, OMEGA organized a 10-student trip to Chicago.  The day began with a visit to the Museum of Science and Industry, followed by a stop downtown and dinner at Navy Pier.  In addition to being a fun way to relax, visiting Chicago is a great way to explore and learn about one of the largest cities in the U.S., and an important center of population, industry, and culture.

End-of-Semester Holiday Social

December 9, 2022

To celebrate the end of the semester and as social prior to Finals Week, OMEGA hosted a winter holiday social in the center of campus, at the Wilmeth Active Learning Center (WALC).  A free catered meal from Panera was provided, as well as materials to build gingerbread houses.

Bricks and Brownies: LEGO Night Social

December 2, 2022

The end of the semester is typically a stressful time for grad students.  To aid in alleviating stress, OMEGA organized a casual social prior to the beginning of Fall 2022 Dead Week and finals.  Free Jimmy John's and desserts were provided, and a variety of de-stress activities such as building with LEGO bricks, origami, and coloring were available.

Fall 2022 Welcome Panel and Picnic

August 26, 2022

At the beginning of the Fall 2022 semester, OMEGA hosted a combination of two events.  First, a panel of current graduate students discussed life as an ME grad student at Purdue for incoming Masters and Ph.D. students.  After the panel, OMEGA held an outdoor "picnic" with free Jimmy John's and time for incoming and returning students to socialize.

Summer Social

June 10, 2022

To kick off the summer and celebrate the end of the 2021-2022 year, OMEGA hosted a social in the Engineering Mall.  Free Jimmy John's and lawn games were provided!

College of Engineering Formal Dance

April 16, 2022

In Spring 2022, OMEGA partnered with several other graduate student organizations, including the Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate Student Organization (ECEGSA), Aero Assist, and the Industrial Engineering Graduate Student Organization (IE GSO) to host a "Casino Royale"-themed formal dance, open to all graduate engineering students.  The event was intended to provide a fun ending to the spring semester and an opportunity to build connections with students from other fields.  Nearly 200 students attended the event.

Academic Programs

Reverse Career Fair

November 8, 2023

OMEGA piloted a new type of event to help connect students with job opportunities -- a "reverse career fair" in partnership with Sandia National Labs.  In this event, students set up posters summarizing their research, and recruiters browsed their work and networked about job possibilities.

Speaker Series

Fall 2023

OMEGA began a new mentoring program in Fall 2023 -- the Speaker Series.  Every three weeks, this seminar-style event brings alumni in academia and industry back to campus (physically or virtually) to share their career path, offer advice to current students, and answer questions.  These are a great way to learn about the opportunities your degree can provide in the future!

Mentoring Program

Spring 2023

OMEGA's mentoring program restarted in February 2023!  After mentors and mentees filled out an interest form, OMEGA created groups of 4-5 students and hosted a kick-off so the groups could meet each other and set plans for the semester.

Sports and Wellness

Soccer Tournament

December 5, 2023

In collaboration with CE and CSGSA, OMEGA hosted an evening soccer tournament at the Turf Recreation Exercise Center (TREC).  We hope to hold additional tournaments in the future, so contact us if your organization would like to join!

IM Sports

Every semester

Each semester, OMEGA sponsors IM teams for ME grad students.  We've participated in sports such as soccer, sand volleyball, tennis, and more.  To get involved, head over to the IM page on our website!

Community Service

CoE Meet and Eat: Letter-Writing

January 22, 2024

The College of Engineering (CoE) hosts periodic "Meet and Eat" events, socials in which graduate students can come together to enjoy a free meal or snack and get to know students other disciplines.  The January 2024 Meet and Eat, partially planned by OMEGA, also included a service component: attendees wrote letters (in multiple languages!) to elderly community members unable to leave their homes and to engineering staff members to express gratitude for their service.
